I recently got a letter that had "postage due .49" written on it. There was a forever stamp on it, not sure why it was postage due. It did not seem heavy, even if it was it would not be .49 would it? The amazing thing, to me, was that the postman wrote that, left me an envelope to pay. I thought that practice was long gone. The postman has gone to lot of trouble for getting 2 quarters back. I paid it and put a thank you note on it. Anyone else experience this?

Was it a square envelope? Square envelopes seem to cost more. I had the same thing happen recently.

It has not happened to me, but I've been hearing that its happened recently to some of the people I have sent the envelopes I've been making.
I feel bad about that. I don't know whether the shape of the envelopes is the culprit or if the stamp is too hard to see on the background of the envelopes.
I guess I should try to check the rules.

According to the USPS website, Square Envelope: add 22¢ Not sure why they are asking for another 49¢ though.

Maybe it requires extra handling in the sorting machines due to the possibility of it going through in the wrong orientation. Which bring up a question - What if you address your regular envelope portrait style instead of landscape. Would that cause a sorting malfunction with the readers by having the writing at 90 degrees ?

71¢ to mail an odd shaped envelope, which I think is the same stamp as heavier Wedding Invitations.

Was it a square envelope? Square envelopes seem to cost more. I had the same thing happen recently. It was a squarish envelope with a forever stamp on it requesting .49. I now have some larger, squarish stationary envelopes from LWA. Guess I need to get some odd valued stamps for these, .22 additional you think? or .49? I am confused.

sharmon202 Honestly, I have no idea. I would think that a Forever + 22¢ stamp would be enough, but I'm not sure why they are requesting an additional 49¢ on top of the Forever stamp on square envelopes. I would ask the post office before you mail it.

I would ask the post office before you mail it. This was a letter I received. The postman left me an envelope to put money in and leave it in the mail box the next day. I started by commenting that I appreciated the effort, I did not really care about the money, just could not figure out the cause of it. Then I am sending a squarish envelope my self and wondered if extra postage would be required. I am going to talk to the post office person enxt time I go in and try to understand requirements. Than I will have to get some odd stamps values to use.

In the UK we get charged something like £1 administration fee plus the extra postage, I once had to pay £1.20 to receive a birthday card - was not impressed

In Aus the sender generally receives an invoice in the mail if postage has been underpaid.
Forgot to include a stamp for a local letter once, it cost $2 for Admin plus the 60c for the stamp.
Haven't received one for an International letter so far, as I always double check postage. But that being said, hopefully if something happened and the recipient was charged, they would let me know so I could send them payment.
