My favourite site and associated blog for UK stamp news is Norvic Philatelics. They are allowed to display information about upcoming Royal Mail stamps often before the stamp details are up on the Royal Mail shop website.

Thanks Mia
That looks interesting - I've just added myself to the site monitoring list.

I like to use the Welsh National Definitives if possible.

alc3261, I prefer to use the Welsh definitives too! I don't mind licking-and-sticking them, instead of using the plain sticker ones. Aberystwyth has a good-sized post office, given that it serves all the villages, hamlets and farms around. (Aber is the most uninhabited part of the UK, even less so than the Highlands of Scotland!) However, it never receives more than a few of new issues. They run out the first day of issue and are never able to get any more. Royal Mail doesn't reckon much to us. Even though they've closed most of the village post offices. So if I want any of the new stamps I have to order online.

I order mine online too since I (gasp!!) live in England.

I'm very confused about ordering stamps online as it seems with royal mail all the themed stamps come in sets and either have values that I wouldn't use in them or come as a set with postcards or other bunkem which I don't want, so I've always bought them in the post office. However I was told last week in our main post office that themed stamps are being discontinued as they're too expensive to produce and no one buys them. Apparently there will still be the occasional run of specials for royal weddings and other royal events but they will be limited to a very short period. Has anyone else in the UK heard anything about this? I've e-mailed royal mail but am yet to receive a reply. At the moment because themed stamps are so hard to obtain in warrington I just use normal stamps and try to decorate the envelope in some other way like washi tape etc.

It is better to ring the RM shop up (03457 641 641 I think is the number, open office hours) - the stamps come in sheets for each value, sometimes single design on a sheet, sometimes more. In theory, you could ask for 10 of the "£1.00 Massed ranks of French cavalry (Cuirassiers) charge and repulsed by British infantry squares" and 5 of the £1.00 The Defence of La Hay Saint Farm by King’s German Legion... I haven't rung up for a while because I've access to a nice little post office (not a main post office).

The blog has some news of next year's programme. Some issues I'm really looking forward to! Some of the themes for next year include Music Icons (Pink Floyd, apparently), Shakespeare, Beatrix Potter, Agatha Christie....
