What makes a good letter to me is the feeling of friendship. I love reading my penpal's news, their gripes, their happiness, everything that makes them unique and wonderful. I've developed some extraordinary friendships and their letters, whether short or long, are GREAT letters.

"Letter writing is the only device for combining solitude with good company" - Lord Byron I absolutely love this quote! This is the first time I've seen it before. It should be a rubber stamp so I could use it on all of my letters.

I like those letters that make me feel like I'm having a conversation with the other person - Those are the ones where I feel compelled to write back right away, to keep the "flow" going, if you will.

I agree that a good letter is mostly about what is on the page. Fancy penmanship and doodles are nice, but personally I care mostly about the exchange of experiences. When you meet people IRL, it's about getting to know each other, sharing stories, anecdotes. Letters should be the same.

Tramplingrose mentioned that letters should be like a conversation, I agree. I have a pen friend who lives across the Pacific Ocean and a bit more from me and his letters (usually 8-10 pages long) really do seem like a conversation. We touch on everything; history, politics, family, art, what animals are eating the fruit in his yard, work, almost anything. We have exchanged poems...his are better than mine. Actually, I try to make my letters a conversation, complete with contractions (words like can't, wouldn't).
I also like positive letters, not that there can't be a problem mentioned now and then.
