I've been tempted getting a letter opener from the Lord of the Rings/ The Hobbit movies, but haven't taken the plunge yet. Usually, I just rip into my mail. Would be cool to get one of those Elvish letter openers.

I don't have them yet, but here's a picture of one of them from an online store: h The Hobbit Sting Letter Opener

Thanks for sharing the Hobbit letter opener. Not as expensive as I'd thought

Thanks for sharing the Hobbit letter opener. Not as expensive as I'd thought You're welcome. Indeed, they aren't too expensive. But still I haven't bought them yet. For some reason I'm like "Na, can just use a scissor, if I want to be neat."

I am looking on Amazon now... came across Zelda! Also, a USB letter opener... Now I've seen everything!

I bought a wobbly egg shaped thing on Amazon. It works pretty well - shaves off about 1/8 of an inch of the envelope. My only gripe with it is that it won’t cut from the corner, you have to start about 1/4 inch along the edge.

I bought a similar letter opener from JetPens - this one is about 1/4" thick and relatively small, so I keep it in my correspondence bag.

That's a really tempting $10.50 thing I totally do not need but will consider if I have $14.50 of something else in the cart.

A couple of months ago, I bought a nice letter opener (from eBay), and surprisingly, I have been able to break my old habit of opening up letters with my fingers.

I started out by ripping or cutting a a thin edge off with scissors. I like the idea of an unusual or vintage letter opener, but with scissors or a dedicated opener, it’s irksome when an opener isn’t at hand.
I have a mini Swiss Army knife on my keychain which works nicely and it’s always in my pocket, but I was wishing I didn’t have to put down the letter in order to open the knife with two hands. The scissors were better for one handed grab and cut. After seeing the other letter opener thread, I decided on a small pocket knife that I could open with one hand, so I got a Kershaw Chive to keep in my pocket. It’s small and slim, so it was a good choice for the task.
Eventually, due to the small size, my large hands, and my concern that I might inadvertently nick myself while fumbling with it, I got the larger Leek instead. I never considered myself a knife guy, but in my efforts to find the perfect solution, I worked my way through a series of options. I was kind of like Goldilocks: this one is too small, this one is too large, this is too hard to open, until I found the one that was just right (for me anyways). The Spyderco Sage 5 is the most gentlemanly of those using the type of easy one handed opening and closing system that I prefer. Still, it’s not something I’d pull out at the office. I can easily open it one handed with the hole in the blade, and close it one handed by squeezing a lock release on the back (the blade just drops closed by gravity). Perhaps a bit overkill, but otherwise, perfection.

Sometimes it takes awhile to find the best solution that makes me happy long-term.
