I actually don't think I've ever owned one before! But I could really use one. So I went looking on Etsy and ebay and I found this awesome ladybug one on Etsy that was pretty inexpensive, so I got that, but it'll be going to my mom in the US before it comes here and also I'm not sure how practical it actually is for use, but it was pretty and ladybug! so, I needed it. XD So I continued looking, to try and find one that would be less for gazing at and more for actually using, plus on this continent so it would come to me and fairly quickly, and I've essentially narrowed it down to two options, both still nice to look at but functionality being amply covered: or Anyone have any input here to help me choose? Which do you like better? Do you think one of them would actually function any better? Haaalp! xP

Both look nice. I have a functional office-type one, and also a more decorative one my mother's neighbour didn't want. Oh, and a souvenir one but of a different type to the knife.
The one on the left might be easier to get into an envelope if it is well-sealed.

This is funny, because I had a few letter-openers and for some stupid reason, gave them away except one. Then I really missed them, so I got a half-dozen 'vintage' ones on fleabay for a ridiculously low price. My favorite is an advertising model for some business. Very comfortable to hold, and the blade is both narrow and sharp.
Both examples are nice, Monkey, but the top one looks like a steak knife.

Hahaha, it does indeed look rather knife-ish.

Found most of mine, one must be downstairs. They all work well, but Patent Attorney's my favorite. Alas, when cleaning the orange one, I wiped out most of the lettering.

sails, those are so fun. Never thought to look online. There are a bunch at my local antique store, but they are rather expensive. Also, my letter opener truly is a steak knife. My husband broke the tip off of it, so I repurposed it.

Okay, now I want a nice looking letter opener too! I've been surfing on eBay and am totally surprised at the huge range of stuff out there! I've seen a few that I liked, and put them on my watch list for now. Will decide later on when I'm not so much in an impulse buying mode.

I'd like to find one that works like the electric ones by cutting off a 1-2mm strip rather than the typical rip-an-edge knife type that leave rough edges. I had one cheapie that had a plastic bit to get under the flap and then a safely embedded razor blade to do the cutting. That was a bit smoother, but still. Right now I just use a scissors and cut the right (stamp) side off, after feeling or candling to see if there's any letter wedged that close to the edge. I _used_ to just tear the flap up and then use a finger to rip open the top edge, but that's only if I want to trash the envelope right then.
Ever seen a non-electric side-of-envelope-cutter-offer?

They are both nice, but I prefer the one on the top. Haven't got one. Will go hunting on the Bay....

My letter opener that I bought from eBay just arrived! I felt it was a justified purchase because I hope to be getting more letters to have to open. Now, I need to find an attractive pen container that I can leave on my nightstand. It has to look more decorative than like an office supply. My favorite pens are strewn all over the surface because I've been writing so many letters lately, and I need to contain them so that the area doesn't look as cluttered and junky.
