Just thought I'd add a little note to this regarding letters both small and large, don't forget they can't be more than 5mm thick or the rate changes. I recently sent a book mark to a friend and the string on the book mark wouldn't fit through the gap they use to check sizes, that resulted in me paying £3.30 as opposed to £1.33 not to mention the big ugly stamp that went on it.

Remember Economy International 85p up to 20g, usually fairly quick except around Christmas. My local sub post office said that's no longer available, I'm heading to town in the morning so I'm going to the main office to argue the point! I've also found it's not available on pay and go machines anywhere in warrington.

"Surface" / economy isn't available for letters to Europe. I occasionally use "surface" for US letters, but I don't write economy/surface on, only putting labels on for airmail (International Standard).

For 85p, I would use the 81p Alice in Wonderland / Inventive Britain stamps (will be still available if you ring RM up and order - p&p is quite reasonable) plus 2 x 2p.
Get hold of the prices booklet, turn the page to International Economy, and then if the post office person denies it, ask them to read the page! I hand my post over the counter already stamped, especially if it is raining, if I'm there to get extra stamps or airmail labels (these can be BOUGHT on eBay!) otherwise, I just feed the postbox.

Yep, same as the current pdf downloadable from RM. Note it says "Letters may be sent by Economy outside Europe only."

I wrote an angry letter last december, to my local paper about that economy rip-off rate, and they printed it too! The thing is, the last posting dates for Christmas leaflet invariably shows that you can send cards to Europe by economy rate. So you look at the pdf online, at the economy rate page, and yes there again, it reads that you can send to Europe at the cheaper rate. But, if you scroll further down, there is a line showing that you cannot use the economy rate to Europe.
I was so angry because I bet lots of people didn't read on and sent cards by economy to European friends and family. And either had then returned, or the recipients had to pay extra. Not a nice thing to happen when you get a Christmas card. I called RM's support line and the chap I spoke to was very surprised. He checked, and agreed that it was confusing. He apologised, but it's hardly his fault.
So, I have found the addresses of the CEO's of the Royal Mail and Post Office (both ladies) and will be sending them my complaint. Grrrrr!

Furious!! International Economy letter posted on Tuesday returned today with a sticker telling me I had not put enough postage on my "Airmail letter" - no Airmail sticker anywhere on this letter. Weight was 14grams. I went to the Post Office who said "Nothing to do with us, that's Royal Mail" Royal Mail office closed. I rang the number on the sticker and after a good five minutes of "press 1 for......, press 2 for......" I got through to a person (from Royal Mail remember) who told me International letter rate was £1.33!! I had to educate her on "International Economy" by directing her to page 15 of the leaflet. I was then told to send my (personal) letter in to make a complaint. I was also told that I should have marked my envelope "International Economy", it does not state this anywhere in the leaflet nor on the website. Complaint made. Very, very cross.
