Yes, I use a fountain pen friendly paper just like this called Life Airmail. It's beautiful for ink sheen and shading too, on the level of Tomoe River paper. When I received it the first time, it felt like I was receiving something special. I did have to separate the sheets for reading, as the show through is amazing. I got mine with coordinating envelopes from Nanami Paper and Supply, but have seen it elsewhere.

This sounds like my Hilroy Onion Skin Paper. Ivory colour, very noisy/crinkly and transparent. Available in US Letter Size 8.5 x 11". I buy it at Staples Office Supply Store , it's $5.89 CAD for 36 sheets.
It takes fountain pen ink beautifully, lots of shading.

I use 2 types of Onion Skin paper. The PaperMillStore sells one brand online (in the US). I also bought some Chinese calligraphy paper. It is 30gsm compared to Tomoegawa's 52gsm. Other options include artist tracing paper, some brands of layout paper, baking parchment & engineers' design papers; all take ink well & show shading & sheen, but are usually slightly heavier than Tomoegawa.
The Life airmail paper mentioned by MKB is wonderful.

I had a pen friend send me a sampling of onion skin & tracing papers, so I tested them for drying time, ink spread (non-crisp lines that appear wider than normal), sheen and shading. Here are the results: All of them have longer drying times. Also they are all neutral in color. The term "white" below indicates less clear, reflecting more white light.
Strathmore Tracing - Very clear but with some texture to the transparency, lovely heavy sheen (more so than Tomoe River), nice shading, the worst of the bunch for ink spread. Cawson Tracing - Very clear and smooth in appearance and writing surface, lovely heavy sheen (more so than TR), nice shading, limited ink spread. Blick Tracing - Whitish textured clear, sheen closer to TR, nice shading, limited ink spread and the most crinkly of the bunch. Onion Skin (no brand given) - Whitest and lease transparent of the bunch, but significantly more transparent than TR for example, least sheen of the bunch, but about the same as TR, least ink spread.
For comparison: Life Airmail - Medium transparency compared to the group, but very smooth appearance and surface like Cawson, sheen just a bit better than TM, nice shading, the best of the bunch in terms of ink spread, but a hint more than TR. Slightly thinner than the group. Dries like TM. This is my favorite in overall performance. Cawson Tracing would be my second choice for the additional crazy sheen, with limited ink spread being the trade off.

just a +1 for jbb's onionskin. IMHO so much better than The Paper Mill Store version, but I have most of a ream left so no more buying onionskin paper until I have made a serious dent into it.

I liked the onion skin I tried but the noise was more of a turn off than I thought it would be.

All this talk of translucent paper makes me long for the old, old Eaton's Crystal Sheers. I remember wanting every color.
