Today's Huffpost featured this column extolling calligraphy. With my twitchy writing I can only dream, but it really is fascinating to watch. "The master calligrapher known as King Blotto III posts short and strangely delicious videos of pens in motion. Whether you're a calligraphy nerd yourself, or have no idea what a Pelikan Souverän M800 fountain pen is, you just might find yourself glued to the screen as the King takes a variety of fancy looking writing utensils on a test ride. If you're a bit concerned the videos may be making you a little too happy, don't fret, you may just be experiencing an autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR. ASMR occurs when certain noises send a euphoric tingle down your scalp and spine, literally making you feel good. The often banal and unexpected noises can cause relaxation, giddiness or a sort of hypnotic trance, hence the constant re-watching of doodle videos. " http://instagram.com/p/BCtGTDrQudY

Wow, fun to watch! I just joined the local calligraphy guild and this makes me even hungrier to get my pens back out and start practicing on a regular basis (I slowed down as I got busier with children...) Thanks for posting!

I so wish I could get the hang of flex nibs!

I enjoy using flex nibs. It is basically a matter of control. Fountain Pen Network is a place I go to regularly and one of the members there has fantastic penmanship. His name is Zed and he often has flex nib pens for sale and always creates a sample of what a given pen is capable of. I asked him if there was a good way of practicing the use of a flex nib. His suggestion was to use a #2 pencil or softer and practice writing using lighter pressure on the up or sidestroke and heavier pressure on the downstroke. If you are a bit heavy handed the practice can help gain the control that is necessary to use a flex nib. The lighter and darker lines that result do a remarkable job of mimicking writing with a flex nib.
A good share of my pen collection are flex nib pens. My only advice is keep a light hand and don't force a nib. Forcing a nib to see how wide a line it can make can destroy the nib or with time create stress cracks usually starting at the breather hole.
