I'm sure this has been discussed but a quick search didn't turn up anything for me so here goes.
Do you log your correspondence? If so, do you use a digital format? Paper? I'm curious how others do this.
I use a simple text file and while that works I know there are better ways to do it.
So yeah, tell me if you log and just how you do so!
Thanks!

I wanted to keep track of which inks I used for letters, so that the recipients would generally always see something new. I just use the Notes app on my phone. It's also nice for seeing when I last wrote:
Letters 2016 01/06/16 Jennifer M. - N Habanero 01/07/16 David A. - DA J.S. Bach 01/08/16 Simone R. - JH Emerald of Chivor
Simple, but always up to date as it's easy. I sometimes add a note or asterisks indicating dip pen, special paper or envelope.

I used to keep track of mail in a spreadsheet but that meant turning on the computer (if it wasn't already turned on). I forgot to log things. So now, I use a page-a-day diary where I log incoming and outgoing nice mail. Not perfect as I do sometimes forget to log the post but it has been OK for the last 6 years. I just log the type of post (postcard, letter, card) and the sender/recipient.

I am a bit more detailed in my log. Incoming letters are notated in black, outgoing notated in the colours in the letter.
Entries look as follows:
Written 2Jan16 Mailed 4Jan16 Gillykat Rhodia Ice FC 66p BV (m) - FC Tenebris Purpuratum FC 65 (m) - Bung box sapphire Dollar 717i - MB Irish Green Dollar 717i - Sheaffer Skrip Lavender Purple Dollar 717i - Sailor Doyou TWSBI 540 c (m) - Callifolio Itzamma Received 7Jan16 Sharmon202 Written 7Jan16. Mailed 7Jan16 Tabby birthday card encl: scratch off ticket Received 8Jan16 Ginger encl: Stash breakfast in Paris tea
etc. The black versus colour helps me distinguish incoming from outgoing and if someone asks what colour purple ink i used in their last letter i just need to scan for purple ink. It is rare that I start and end a letter in the same colour.

I just note down the name in my pocket calendar with monthly overview adding a little icon for a letter, postcard or packet. That's it.
It's good enough to keep track of when I wrote to whom. I don't register incoming mail. Unanswered letters just stay on my desk until I've replied.

I don't log mail, I usually keep on sight incoming and outgoing mail and put in a box the answered letters.

I put a sticky note on a letter when it arrives with the date. When I reply I add the reply date and then put the letter in a basket on my desk. Once the next letter from penpal is received I move the letter to their box and start the process all over again. I only do this with letters, not so much with postcards. When I travel though I do make a note of who I sent postcards to... that way I make sure I include all my penpals.

For each pen friend, I used to log arrival date, replying date and which stationery I used. This year I have started employing a monthly-overview page in my journal, so I record the sender but not the arrival date. This allows me to see the monthly statistics but not the data specific to a pen pal. Time will tell which sytem works better for me.

To help avoid repeating the same stories over and over again, I use a small Leuchtturm (sp?) to track who, when, a few bullets about content, and any enclosures. And for each letter I record its date plus the date of the last letter and the date of the following letter, that allows continuity tracking.

I do it like kalliope, putting down the name in my pocket calender when I sent out a letter, incoming mail just stays on my desk until answered. I guess this works as I don't have that many penpals.

If i was only writing to non fp people this would be great. As it is, i tend to write with a lot of different colours and pens so just detaling that takes up a lot of room. However I do like the simplicity of this one.

I've been using the Notes app on my phone as MKB suggested and it has been working well but I think I'm going to try this one as well. I think the side by side Received/Sent will be helpful. Thanks Bruce.

Thanks Bruce. This is very similar to what I've done, but I use four columns. The first is for name and address of the correspondent. The second column is date received, the third column is for the date I mail the response and the last and largest column is for me to make notes about what I wrote about, what pen and ink I used and if I enclosed anything.
