I use an old swiss army knife to open my letters. It is banged up from camping, but still works fine.

I was using a paring knife, in order to preserve the envelopes, but then last month I found this set at Gadabout Vintage! Both the letter opener and scissors have brass handles, I haven't figure out how to hang the case yet, I'm afraid to damage the cork case backing, so it just sits in a tall pen stand for now.

I usually use fingers to tear along the top edge, which really makes a mess at least of the back of the envelope. If I want to keep the 'lope, even just for a week or so before I reply, then I use scissors to cut 2-3mm off one of the short sides. After tapping it on the other side to move the contents down. Unless it's thin and light enough that I can hold it up and see where the paper is. A quick puff of air on that side of the envelope and it opens right up. That method can be done with fingers but it takes off at least 10mm that way.

Some of you have such beautiful letter openers. Like others have mentioned before, I use a paring knife. Not very elegant but it gets the job done.

I do keep an eye out for a nice letter opener with character!

Some I can get under the flap and loosen the adhesive by sliding a finger. Others I tear off a very thin strip on the narrow stamp side of the envelope or use scissors for the same, especially on special envelopes.

Here's my current letter opener that I picked up recently at an antique fair. It's a bit of a monster (shown on A4 sheet) but very sharp, heavy and opens letters better than any of the other letter openers that I have.

Sometimes when people seal the envelope right to the corner, I can't get my opener in so I have to get my other "opener" out... It can be little rough on the letters but most survive.

Migo just dashed to the out tray and examined the seal on your latest letter. She breathed a sign of relief. There is enough room for your normal opener.

Here's my dragon opener. I suspect some envelopes will spontaneously open merely at sight of it.

I admit I'm a guy so I like swords. I've had the sword (technically a Confederate cavalry sabre) letter opener about 12 years now. It's duller than a froe (no, seriously, I have one of those as well and the froe is actually sharper) but doesn't mangle the envelope as long as you don't get into a hurry.

How can you tell it's confederate and not union? Can you not sharpen it?

Um, a steak knife? Maybe I should put a letter opener in my letter to Santa this year.
