I have received numerous letters with homemade envelopes or hand crafted envelopes. The envelopes are so creatively done.
For those that make their own envelopes, is there a pattern you follow? What materials do you use?

I use the Envelope Punch Board from We R Memory Keepers. I picked it up at my local Micheals Arts and Crafts. For paper, I've used gift bags, wrapping paper, and scrapbook paper.

I've definitely got to give this a try. All my pen pals send such cute, creative envelopes. Mine are starting to look pretty pathetic. Perhaps I'll journey out to Michael's this weekend. Thanks for the tip!

I found a template online that I printed onto cardstock (which I need to make on cardboard). I use old calenders, magazines, or scrapbooking paper to construct it.

I've got this one: www.meerleuks.nl/product/diy-houten-enveloppenmal-standaard-p39207 and a couple of plastic ones that are much harder to use. For paper I use scrapbook paper, books with thick paper, magazines and anything else that looks nice and is strong enough to hold as an envelop. For decorations I wish I could draw I make it up with some washi tape, stickers, stamps - depending on my mood for decoration or the style I wish to accomplish. Wow that sounds like I make pieces of art and that's not really the case. I just want to make it look special

I use the envelope punch board too. And I have a set of plastic templates I bought from Tiger. (Tigerstores) I'm not sure that they sell them now though. Or there are templates online all over the place. Print them on thick paper or card, and you're away! If all else fails, find your favourite envelope size and carefully take it apart to use as a template.

Are there any regulations about the paper that can be used? I know there are size limitations, but what about color, pictures or writing?

Are there any regulations about the paper that can be used? I know there are size limitations, but what about color, pictures or writing? In the US and UK just about anything goes. I have sent atlas pages and specialty paper from the craft store. I have received magazine pages with photographs, calendar pages and other busily printed envelope paper. In such cases, the address is usually written on a label of some sort for legibility.

Here in Italy I had no problem receiving any kind of envelope. For sending the post office ask for only plain white envelopes, but I've drown on those and added stickers and I had no problem. I think I will try making my own with various kind of paper of different colours but I have yet to find a template that I can use.

I just bought the envelope maker from We R Memory Makers. It's super simple to use. My husband thinks it's great because I am using up my old scrapbooking paper. Little does he know that I bought more paper today because I thought it would make cool envelopes.

I "made" a template from an envelope I liked: I just carefully took it apart at the glued seams, and now I just trace along the edges onto any type of paper. I use magazine paper, wrapping paper, newspaper, scrapbooking paper, almost any. I imagine one could do this with different sized envelopes in order to have a variety.

Here's one I made and laminated that works with a square piece of paper and no cutting.
