That's the conundrum I'm facing. Last year I was spending close to two hours a letter without any ink/paper/envelope concerns. I usually can find a 1-2 hour block; not so much that I don't have time for more, but that's about all I can usually mentally and finger-ly enjoy at a time. If it took 3 leisurely sessions to write a letter, that's fine, but, IDK, somehow, procrastination or mental inertia: those 3 blocks end up being over a week... or two, rather than consecutive days. > I'm not against writing a long letter when it's warranted Oh, same here, but do I _really_ need to answer six months of back 5Q. Three might be just as good, no? I do enjoy it, though. > Fortunately I'm not looking to chop my time in half, but a twenty-percent improvement may be the difference I need I'd take that. Less googling stuff would help. Does it matter if the pen I'm talking about has been inked for 4 years or 5? Or whether I quote some article I read instead of giving the gist? Or try to figure out what that TV show or book was called? I mean, I love mentioning something like a show, but is the recipient really going to even look it up, much less try to watch it? Rarely, I'm sure they do. I appreciate recommendations... but, I don't usually look up titles that are just mentioned rather than recommended. Nice to see them, though. Anyway, the computer is a distraction in a way, but I also like including details I couldn't remember without it. Honestly, it'd take half the time if I just, say, wrote every saturday _and_ sunday for an hour instead of watching yet-another-episode of... whatever. Or reading NYT or WSJ for half an hour and getting depressed enough all I feel like doing is watching a show vs being the least bit creative.

If I didn't (waste) spend time picking out the stationery, it would take me half as much time! That's part of the fun!!! I take a ridiculous amount of time per letter - all of which is pure enjoyment. As my correspondents know, I'll never use one word where four will do, I'll spirograph, collage, calligraphy, anything I want..... I enjoy the process of production of a letter, which is why I can't write letters if I'm not in a creative mood.

Goals for 2022 - After being gone for 2 long years (was just working so much) - I have missed out on all of this. Now doing Valentine's if anyone wants to exchange:
Justine van Spyk 216 Wicklow Court Roseville, CA 95747
And then goals are to experiment with more types of Kawaii, Austen-isms, new pens and papers, and finding a few close penfriends again. Everyone really shut down for a while, and I didn't want to tax anyone to write. Anyway - happy, non-judgmental doodler here - love God and country, and do Bindery for a living at a print shop. Middle aged - silly dog, too many clothes... you know the drill. Glad to see this site is still open! - Be well, Justine

I'm going to aim for 200 letters next year, 230 letters in 2021 so it is doable.
I'm making my letters a bit shorter, my normal was about four pages, now it is closer to three pages. If I get a 10 page letter (Australian friend only twice a year) I will match it or close. When letters are less frequent you have more to say...usually.
I also want to have a bit more fun with inks, seems like my usual choice is blue or blue black or black blue.

I’m contemplating an experiment with shorter handwritten letters so I can turn them around faster. Yeah, I’ve tried this in the past, too. And I think something like “oh yeah, I just wanted to say something about [something] really quick,” and the next thing I know, I’ve suddenly written like half a page on it. I’ve had to accept the fact that I’m just very chatty. I'm the same! I've come to realize writing briefly takes some skill! P.S. I love your chatty letters!

Argh. Goals.
This year I’m thinking in terms of vectors. Not mathematically but in terms of general direction. So for 2022 I want to steer toward answering letters in a more timely fashion.
As for brevity, a pen pal and I once played around with “Bullet Letters”, which was kind of fun.

My main goal right now is to just catch up on replies My reply pile isn't huge and intimidating, I'm just in a writing funk lately.
