My daughters diaries to me were hilarious, they also laughed at their entries, I am finding I am loving re reading them again, somehow I dont remember reading them before. Its like reading a good feel good novel. I'm sorry you had to write down dark entries ginny , one of my daughters also did that but it was in notes that she hid at the back of posters which we found. Gilly, 20 pages!!! ok I admit I did write a few letters that were 17pages but that was the intro letter as my intro is quite interesting because of my life experiences, to me anyway lol. I wrote a lot during lockdown and have kept it up so far

Oh, no need to feel sorry for me - it's all good. I'm sure I'm no exception when it comes to angst, doom and gloom in teenage times. It's a difficult phase of life for most of us, and many teens tend to indulge in an embarrassing orgy of navel-gazing. That doesn't mean that the problems aren't real, it just means that we have difficulties to put them into context / perspective at that age. It's part of growing up *shrugs*
Glad to hear your daughter's diaries were hilarious

I'm sure mine are full of 20s (and 30s?) angst alternating with better stuff, but I'm sure I was motivated to write in proportion to how bad I was feeling. I may read them some day. Only in my teens or early 20s did I feel angsty enough to write poetry, though. The older journals have a lot more "I feel crappy because I didn't apply for any jobs, or get any exercise, or get out of bed before noon" during various periods of not having any paid activities to do for extended periods.

I love writing letters but when I ask myself why I am met with a moment of silence while I think about it. There is no single answer. I enjoy conversation and human connection...or is it really that I love the feel of pen gliding over paper? Or is it...? It's a lot of things rolled into a single, pleasant experience. So I wonder, why do you write letters? Well, uhmmmm....I like to?
Oh. And yeah. Pens gliding over paper. I have lots of both. And telling people about my activities in a way that might make them smile or laugh (and getting similar replies). And making friends with random people.
Et cetera. 😊

Oooooh ! How could I have missed this topic ? I enjoyed the reasons written here, and recognise myself in them.
I write letters, first, for the pleasure to have a deeper contact with someone than in electronics. When you see the enveloppe, the stamps, the handwriting, when you see the chose of the paper, ... It tells so much about the moment the person had writing you. One of my penpal, for example, uses envelopes with a single stamp, but small squared paper, blue ink but underlines some words with sparkling ink, she glues some stickers, etc. If feels like she's sending a piece of her day.
I also like the moments I spend reading and writing. Even if I may do something else, even if I am stressed 90% of the time these last weeks, at least I have a moment for myself and my penpal. At least it's something positive to do and it is stimulating. And, last but not least : it's always nice to take someone's else eyes, and have an advice, know that other humans have the same feelings, needs, abilities, ... Than you do, while being completely different.

It's not unlike recognizing a friend from across the park before you can make out any details. You just know it's them.
I especially like your line, "It feels like she's sending a piece of her day." That physical connection, I think, underlies all the other reasons we like writing and receiving letters.

"I like to" needs no elaboration when it comes to it. And of course, making friends with people you otherwise would never have opportunity to meet is a gem of a bonus. I quite like that reason myself.

I love stationery so much that I had to find an outlet to use up all the stationery I purchase. Echoing @dignums post and many others above I too love the connection and friendships that ensue. It's a wonderful world out there that I travel vicariously with my letters and postcards. Check out my latest stationery stash I purchased the other day

In contrast to some of us, I’m not at all a people person. And that’s why I like writing letters. That and the lovely Edelstein Smoky Quartz that I’ve got in the pen now…
