I knew I had a propensity to clutter, so I built a writing desk with a slant.

Oh, and as for letter length, I do try to match the length received, but very roughly. Often I’ll still write a medium long letter to a short reply, but if their letter was short, I feel like I have permission to be short too. It depends to on if I have interesting things to say, or if I’m desperately trying to come up with something to write about. I actually had to stop matching letter length as a practice. Too many of us would try to write the same length letter or something slightly longer; then over time the average length of the letter escalates to something where it would take me 3-4 hours to write. Often that would sink my InCo attempts as I would be at a desk 10-12 hours a day between work and letter writing. I think most letters pre-email were relatively shorter in length than when correspondence became more of a hobby. I write the letters I want to write, though I do attempt to provide good value for postage. If anything I might hold back a topic or two if it’s getting too long and send another letter later.

Whenever I decide to do something, I go ALL IN, so when I started this hobby 5 years ago, I wrote to everyone. I don't ever want anyone to feel left out. This is why I write to over 50 people and I will never NOT have a reply pile. I am so sorry for my long response times! I try to match the length of my reply to the length of the letter received. I label my penpals as "short-letter penpals" and "long-letter penpals." Is that a quirk or do the rest of you do that as well? Between work cycles and everything else in life, I will almost never not have a reply pile. Certain pen pals, I have to block off time to write or plan that their replies will take a couple days to complete. Others, I can knock out in an hour or two. I do also try to match reply length to letter received, but I also know I can be long-winded with some topics and my handwriting is rather large, so I don’t always expect that to be reciprocated.

I pretty much ALWAYS have a Reply pile. I'm in an unusual position at the moment of only having 2 unreplied-to letters and what's more I'm actually writing a reply to one of those right now (hello stormymorning ) But usually I would have anything between 5 and 15 letters awaiting a response. In relation to matching letter length, I try but only within reason. Sometimes I just don't feel like writing a long letter or just can't seem to find anything to write about in which case I'd rather send a short but hopefully less drawn out letter than one that is long but with nothing actually of interest in it!

A file for penpal letters: Walnuts, Almonds, Pistachio, Honey Roast, Marshmallows or Ice Cream. Is that quirky? WHERE is the “Chocolate” file?!?

Quirky. Hmmm. The Latin Rite dating system? The absurd variety of raven rubber stamps? The decommissioned battleship postcards? Maybe so, maybe so...

It actually bothers me to have a messy desk, but it always seems to happen no matter what. The gremlins seem to follow me everywhere. LOL Oh I totally agree! I keep telling myself that I just need a bigger desk....but I know that will just give me more surface area to pile things on! I have a high tolerance for clutter but then it will all get to be too much and I'll have a manic cleaning fit (everything off the desk and from around it and then reorganize). Then it all slowly builds up again, lol. Ah well. Here's to hoping once I finally get my she shed electrified and can actually move my office in there, things will change, hahahahahaha

There's a limit to how much can get piled up on it before there's absolutely no space left for writing, and I'm forced to clear it. If I had a big desk the task of clearing it would feel so overwhelming I would propably end up writing on the floor
